ROLE OF THE CENTROMERE IN THE GENETIC IMMUNITY OF EUKARYOTES

Abstract
Every year, new mechanisms are being discovered for how prokaryotes protect themselves against foreign DNA, although bacteria regularly use lateral gene transfer for their evolution. In contrast, lateral gene transfer seems to be much less frequent in Eukaryotes but we know nearly nothing about how these organisms protect themselves against incoming DNA. In my talk I will present our most recent results about possible mechanisms of defense in eukaryotes, using fungi as model systems. Particularly, I will concentrate on our current understanding of how Eukaryotes distinguish self from non-self genetic elements.
